J.P. Morgan’s focus on customisation, its wide range of products and a proactive rather than reactive approach to client service has ensured an overwhelming victory in this category for the fourth year in a row.
As private banks sought to stand out in equity markets characterised by low volatility they have turned to J.P. Morgan for its reputation, expertise and, above all, wide range of products, to provide diversity to their offering. “There has been widespread demand across our entire product suite, with no single product dominating activity. Private banks are increasingly seeking a customised approach, which means that our ability to deliver new and innovate solutions to the market has been one of our key advantages,” explains Vincent Ip, executive director, equity derivatives group, customised solutions. “We offer them the means to differentiate themselves with our customised approach.” J.P. Morgan’s outstanding capability in non-flow equity product saw a significant rise in turnover over the last 12 months.
An emphasis on maintaining a constant dialogue with clients and tailoring products to suit their needs is key to its operation, explains Ip. “We supply institutions, so above all it has to be simple, effective and cost-efficient,” he continues. That commitment to simplicity and customisation has also created one of the most comprehensive product suites in Asia. Ip’s team has rapidly responded to clients’ needs as the year has progressed, creating products including a note to capture the upside of Japan’s fiscal and monetary loosening, another focussed on the undervaluation of the US equity market, and a product tracking the convergence of A-share and H-share prices in the run up to the launch of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect platform.
Ip is rightly proud of J.P. Morgan’s continued strength in equity-linked non-flow structured products. “We provide the building blocks for the private banks so that they can stand out from the competition,” he concludes. The approach has clearly paid off, as private bank gatekeepers once again nominated J.P. Morgan as the Best Provider of Equity-linked Non-flow Structured Products.
