Product Insights: Finding bright spots: the fixed income essential playbook for 2021

The trend of ultra-low yields in developed market fixed-income is likely to persist into 2021. Such sub-zero interest levels and a paucity of avenues for income beg the question: where should investors be looking in their search for enhanced yield?

Active fixed income investors can pull on several levers such as interest rate management, asset allocation and scrutinized security selection to achieve attractive returns despite low entry yields. At this session, Hayden Briscoe, Head of Fixed Income Asia Pacific, will navigate through the fixed income landscape and identify bright spots for fixed income investing in 2021.

Building a best-in-class advisory offering – 2021-2026 the crucial five-year plan

Long gone are the halcyon days of the 1990s for private banks in Asia when personalised services for differentiated client segments were enough to justify higher fees for high net worth clients. Accelerated fee compression, digital disruption and integrated institutional benefits have forced incumbents to examine not only what they offer HNWI clients, but how they define and deliver the advisory promise.

Savvy clients now demand greater personalisation, a faster delivery of relevant ideas and best-in-class execution. If this were not enough, private banks contend with ever increasing regulatory requirements and burgeoning costs of digitalisation.

Asian Private Banker’s AUM league tables indicate over US$2 trillion worth of clients’ assets (a YoY CAGR of 10% over the last decade) are up for grabs for the smartest, most innovative and efficient advisory offering.

What will define advisory for the future?

Product Insights: Outlook and Opportunities in China: The World’s Best Consumption Story in 2021?

With the coronavirus largely under control in China, investors now have an opportunity to consider what the post-COVID investment environment there might look like in 2021. Can domestic consumption in China continue to support the country’s growth – and will we continue to see a V-shape recovery in China’s economy? What will be the likely impact of a Trump/Biden Presidency to U.S.-China relations over the next few years? What are some of the investment themes that are emerging in China today?

Join Winnie Chwang, Matthews Asia; Laura Wang, Morgan Stanley and Philip Wyatt, UBS Global Wealth management for a panel discussion on these topics and more, as they discuss China’s macro-economic outlook, investment opportunities, and risks, that investors should be mindful of in 2021.

Product Insights: Balancing Act: How gold can protect and grow portfolios

It’s been a dramatic end to the year in global markets, with huge swings in the equity markets relating to US election news, and successful preliminary vaccine trials. For long-term investors though, interest rates remain on the floor and the lower for longer mantra is expected well into 2022. For advisors and investors, this low rate environment is necessitating a review in a portfolio asset allocation and the search for income and growth has never been stronger.

Step forward Gold. Often seen as the traditional safe haven, gold investments are now increasingly on the radar of investors. Yet there remains uncertainty on how to use gold intelligently within a strategic asset allocation. How it can be used to hedge efficiently. And most importantly, how it can help generate yield for investors going forward, rather than being a defensive play.

Join us for this illuminating panel discussion where we look at both the supply and demand characteristics for gold as an asset class, and look at the outlook for the precious metal in investors’ portfolios in 2021 and beyond.

Product Insights: The Future of Fixed Income Investing and the rise of Indexing and ETFs

Fixed income index and ETF products have played a critical role in the search for yield this past year, as a low interest rate environment impacted income levels within investors’ traditional credit portfolios. The behaviour of fixed income ETFs in particular during the liquidity sell-off and volatility in March demonstrated that intelligently constructed portfolios using ETFs helped both mitigate risk, and position investors successfully for the longer-term.

This session looks at how the events of 2020 shaped the fixed income indexing landscape, affirming the role of ETFs in modernizing the bond market, and satisfying multiple use cases, particularly in sustainable investing and new markets like China bonds.

Product Insights: Re-imagining private banking – execution efficiency meets alpha generation

Alpha generation is imperative to your end-clients and even more so in these uncertain times. In March this year, spreads across all fixed income products exploded. In those moments, it was feared that the market would break down, with swinging volatility and tightening liquidity making it difficult to source and accurately price risk. However, the market continued to function, with electronic trading platforms like MarketAxess seeing record trading volumes through the period. According to Greenwich Associates, nearly two thirds of Asian investors found electronic trading beneficial during the height of the crisis and around the same percentage have since indicated that they expect their use of electronic platforms to increase. What’s the impact on private banks? And how can trading desks drive alpha for the whole business thanks to e-trading?

Join Christophe and Erik for a discussion on how MarketAxess has built customised tools specifically tailored to Private Banks’ unique execution needs. In this session you’ll learn about MarketAxess: who we are, what we do, and why it matters to you. You’ll also learn about Axess IQ, our unique one-stop-shop for private banks that blends liquidity, data and execution efficiency tools all in one smart and fully customised solution.

Product Insights: Global Fixed Income: being opportunistic in an uncertain world

What should we expect from Fixed Income markets next year and beyond? The global pandemic has tested the lower bound for interest rates, whilst government spending programmes provide an inflationary risk to bond prices in future. Meanwhile risky assets face uncertainty in the face of economic lock-downs, with many sectors facing profitability challenges.

Allianz Global Opportunistic Bond strategy is designed with a high degree of flexibility, to help navigate this complex market environment. The strategy makes use of return drivers across duration, currencies, curve, inflation and spread premia – so that it can target healthy income through the cycle – with an “all-weather” approach.

We explore how the strategy has positioned through the COVID pandemic so far, highlighting the toolkit needed to benefit from volatile markets. We also present our outlook for 2021, including our expected strategy and key themes in the portfolio.

Product Insights: Disinterest in Interest (rates)?

We can almost see light at the end of the tunnel, with the two major macro uncertainties of the US Presidential election and successful vaccine now on the cusp of finding some form of resolution. Economic activity however, remains weak as many economies continue or even begin to enter their second lockdown. Governments globally have used massive tools of ample liquidity and lower interest rates in response to credit contagion and a potential financial crisis. With interest rates at or past the floor, and credit stress still looking ominous, what levers can investors pull to continue to generate returns in fixed income?

Alasdair Ross, Columbia Threadneedle Investments, Head of Investment Grade Credit, together with Yassar Ali, HSBC Private Banking’s Head of Fixed Income Funds, will be discussing the importance of credit selection as a key contributor of fixed income returns and key considerations for Asia based clients for Global credits.

What will be the legacy of COVID-19 on private banking operations in Asia-Pacific

The COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing restrictions imposed by governments worldwide have affected many industries, including the private banking sector in Asia. But what has been the full degree of impact experienced by banks of different sizes and operational models?

Existing guidelines and policies have in most cases been generally adequate to deal with the challenges of 2020, but some gaps were discovered in remote record-keeping and trading functions to enable traders and client advisors to work from home (WFH). And to what extent did those WFH requirements impact RMs’ productivity, beyond the obvious restrictions on not being able to meet clients face to face?

COVID has certainly accelerated digital transformation across every private bank, not just regionally but also globally and there still remains a need to understand clients through data rather than face to face interaction whilst global restrictions remain in place.

Will the practice of serving clients remotely via data analytics become the legacy of the pandemic on private banking operations in Asia Pacific?
