Opinion: In praise of bonds

In May 2009 your correspondent went off the local HSBC to invest. After being informed brightly by a products person that investing made sense because, after all, the bank was only paying a 0.001% savings rate, I was persuaded to buy a fund. But which fund? Anything structured was too complicated. Equities were far too volatile. Commodities paid no dividends….
