Decoding EM equities: Myths, megatrends and mispricings

Emerging market (EM) equities are often mischaracterized as narrow, shallow, and hard to forecast relative to developed market (DM) equities. This session offers an objective, data-grounded view that addresses common misconceptions. We examine slow-moving trends that, over time, have expanded breadth and enhanced diversification potential. We then link these forces to today’s opportunity set, showing how they could shape EM equity investing in the years ahead.

We also discuss the importance of scale in order to consistently invest in technology and data in order to maintain our edge in systematic investing.

Why Asia needs to be a core allocation in global portfolios
Asia’s new phase of development is distinct from past cycles. Growth is no longer driven purely by exports or cyclical recovery, but by domestic demand, technological capability, capital‑market maturity, and a broader set of economic pillars. This transition reinforces the strategic relevance of Asia in global portfolios—not just as a growth allocation, but as a source of resilient income and differentiated alpha. The luncheon will draw on Eastspring’s decades of extensive on-the-ground experience to discuss how Asia’s market inefficiencies and evolving risk premia can be harnessed into implementable portfolio decisions.

  • Why capturing the Asian opportunity set will require discretionary allocations to be expressed through specific Asian equity styles, active country strategies, and dedicated fixed income building blocks?
  • Which of Asia’s equity and bond markets and sectors are best positioned to benefit from the region’s structural shifts?
  • How can a systematic investment framework help to capture more consistent and uncorrelated alpha across Asian markets and cycles and what makes this approach different from other systematic offerings?
