Best Private Bank – Credit Advisory

Jyrki Rauhio

regional head of Credit Advisory, Asia Pacific

We are honoured to receive Best Private Bank – Credit Advisory, for the third consecutive year. At the heart of our credit advisory platform is our client-centric focus and we endeavour to provide insightful, customised, and market-relevant credit advisory services to clients.

Our credit advisory team has an intuitive understanding of client needs as our advisors work closely with the relationship managers to comprehend their financial circumstances and analyse their current debt structures. The result is an efficient and sustainable approach to leverage which is integrated into their long-term investment strategy. This award demonstrates our commitment to developing and expanding our credit advisory platform with more exclusive, best-in-class and tailored solutions that best fit clients’ needs.

What was behind the judges’ decision?

  • During the period under consideration, HSBC Global Private Banking tilted the balance of its lending book away from more commoditised Lombard lending to higher margin structured financing, resulting in higher loan spreads in both Hong Kong and Singapore
  • Defying the intense market volatility seen in both global and regional markets in 2022 — which led to markedly more margin calls — HSBC Global Private Banking continued its impressive record of having suffered zero credit losses in Asia-Pacific since 2017
  • The bank’s willingness to keep providing credit to clients in 2022, while maintaining prudent risk measures, was directly linked to a significant haul of net new money during the period under consideration, according to figures shared with Asian Private Banker’s judging panel
  • HSBC Global Private Banking in 2022 notably expanded and enhanced its credit platform in a number of key areas, including lending to general partners against illiquid stakes in private equity and hedge funds; lending against illiquid stocks; and jumbo single-stock financing

What we said

Given the difficult underlying market conditions, it would have been understandable if HSBC Global Private Banking throttled its credit operations in 2022 and instead focused on client deleveraging. However, that emphatically was not the case, as the bank kept delivering customised financing solutions to its U/HNWIs while maintaining prudent risk measures, said Daniel Shane, editor, Asian Private Banker. “In addition to its sharp focus on growing its higher-margin structured loan book, HSBC Global Private Banking demonstrated an impressive appetite for innovation on the credit front, evident in offerings such as luxury yacht and art financing.

For these reasons, Asian Private Banker is proud to once again award HSBC Global Private Banking the prize for Best Private Bank – Credit Advisory at the 12th Awards for Distinction, the region’s premier industry awards programme.
